Etymology edit

Of (やま) (yama, mountain) + がら, but the origin of the latter portion is uncertain. Theories include derivation from 軽々と動く (karagara to ugoku “moving lightly, easily”) or from ヤマクグリムレ (roughly, “flock hidden in the mountains”).[1] Attested from at least the 13th century.
