Etymology
editOf 山 (yama, “mountain”) + がら, but the origin of the latter portion is uncertain. Theories include derivation from 軽々と動く (karagara to ugoku “moving lightly, easily”) or from ヤマクグリムレ (roughly, “flock hidden in the mountains”).[1] Attested from at least the 13th century. Compare 小雀 (kogara, “willow tit”), エボシガラ (eboshigara, “tufted tit”), and 四十雀 (shijūkara, “Japanese tit”).
