|けつ > けっ
Appears to be originally from Middle Chinese compound 缺點 (khwet temX, “deficient point”). The Chinese characters 欠 and 缺 are synonymous, and the former apparently replaced the latter in Japanese spellings of this term. The 缺 character is not used in modern Japanese.
- something that detracts from perfection: a fault, a flaw, a defect
- a disadvantage, a drawback
- a failing grade
- (a failing grade): 満点 (manten, “a perfect score; full marks”)
