EtymologyEdit

雷神鳥, calque of English thunderbird. This term is built from the components 雷神(raijin, thunder god) + (chō, bird) rather than the expected (rai, thunder) + (chō, bird) because the term 雷鳥 had already been used to mean rock ptarmigan, a type of snow grouse native to Japan.

NounEdit

雷神鳥 ‎(hiragana らいじんちょう, romaji raijinchō)

  1. a thunderbird

Usage notesEdit

The term サンダーバード(sandābādo) is more commonly used as a translation for the English term thunderbird.
