EtymologyEdit

雷神鳥, calque of English thunderbird. This term is built from the components 雷神 ‎(raijin, thunder god) + ‎(chō, bird) rather than the expected ‎(rai, thunder) + ‎(chō, bird) because the term 雷鳥 had already been used to mean rock ptarmigan, a type of snow grouse native to Japan.
