First attested in the Seokbo sangjeol (釋譜詳節 / 석보상절), 1447, as Middle Korean 골ᄑᆞ다〮 (Yale: kòlphò-tá), from (kolh-, to hunger) + ᄇᆞ (-po, adjective-deriving suffix).
