First attested in the Worin seokbo (月印釋譜 / 월인석보), 1459, as Middle Korean 다티〮다〮 (Yale: tàthí-tá).

(dat-, to close, to shut) + (-hi-, passive suffix) + (-da, suffix conventionally given for citation forms).
