First attested in the Eoje naehun, (御製內訓 / 어제내훈), 1475 , as Middle Korean 본ᄃᆡ〮 (Yale: pwòntóy), from (Yale: pwòn, “origin”, ) + ᄃᆡ〮 (Yale: -tóy, adverbial suffix).
