Of native Korean origin. (sum, breath) +‎ (-s-, genitive interfix; omitted from the spelling, but this causes the tense phonation of the following consonant) +‎ 구멍 (gumeong, hole).

    • Though still prescribed in Standard Korean, most speakers in both Koreas no longer distinguish vowel length.
