Etymology

edit

Extremely uncertain; many different etymologies have been proposed (for which see Lehmann 1986, who calls the etymology "massively disputed"), but most agree on at least some link to either ๐Œท๐Œด๐‚ (hฤ“r) or the stem of *๐Œท๐Œน๐ƒ (*his). This etymology is incomplete. You can help Wiktionary by elaborating on the origins of this term. don't replace this with a single ety unless there has been recent research since Lehmann which goes into this; as Lehmann's lemma demonstrates, there are multiple plausible explanations.
