From Sanskrit तक्षशिला (takṣaśilā, “City of Cut Stone”). Cognate with Gandhari 𐨟𐨐𐨿‫𐨮𐨭𐨁𐨫 (tak‫ṣaśila‬), Pali Takkasilā.
