Etymology edit

From Latin -īna and its derived forms in other European languages, such as Danish -ine, present in many borrowed names and subsequently used independently to form new Icelandic names.

  1. Forms female given names, usually from male given names, e.g. Gíslína from Gísli, Sæmundína from Sæmundur, but sometimes from other names, e.g. Mýrdalína from Mýrdalur, a place name.
  2. (humorous) Forms nouns descriptive of women, e.g. óléttína (pregnant woman) from óléttur (pregnant).
