-овий

-о́вий or -ови́й • (-óvyj or -ovýj)

Used to form adjectives from nouns; -y.
‎зима́ (zymá) + ‎-овий (-ovyj) → ‎зимо́вий (zymóvyj)

If the noun's stem is hard, -овий is used (зимо́ви́й (zymóvýj), ка́ловий (kálovyj), ярови́й (jarovýj))
If the noun's stem is soft, the following rules apply:
- -евий and -євий are used if the stress falls on the adjective's stem (including the suffixal part -ев)
  - -евий is used after ungeminated soft consonants, except /j/ (вишне́вий (vyšnévyj), місце́вий (miscévyj), ема́левий (emálevyj), перце́вий (percévyj), борще́вий (borščévyj))
  - -євий is used after /j/ (бає́вий (bajévyj)) and geminated soft consonants (життє́вий (žyttjévyj), почуттє́вий (počuttjévyj))
- -овий and -ьовий are used if the stress falls on the adjective's ending (masculine nominative -и́й)
  - -овий is used after hushing sibilants (борщови́й (borščovýj), біржови́й (biržovýj)) and /j/ (крайови́й (krajovýj))
  - -ьовий is used otherwise (життьови́й (žyttʹovýj), польови́й (polʹovýj))
