Etymology

edit

From Proto-Germanic *-ΓΎuz. The related suffix *-ōþuz is marginally attested in Gothic; only πŒΌπŒ°πŒ½πŒ½πŒΉπƒπŒΊπ‰πŒ³πŒΏπƒ (manniskōdus) appears to match completely, although πŒ²πŒ°πŒ±πŒ°πŒΏπ‚πŒΎπ‰πŒΈπŒΏπƒ (gabaurjōþus), πŒ°πŒΏπŒ·πŒΎπ‰πŒ³πŒΏπƒ (auhjōdus), πŒ²πŒ°πŒΏπŒ½π‰πŒΈπŒΏπƒ (gaunōþus) and π…π‚πŒ°π„π‰πŒ³πŒΏπƒ (wratōdus) also could be interpreted as containing that suffix instead of bare -ΓΎus.

This suffix is sometimes said to not have been productive in Gothic anymore, meaning that any word in which it is found would have to be an inherited term from Proto-Germanic.
