Etymology edit

From Middle Dutch -lics, from Old Dutch -welikis (in the combination dagawelikis (daily) > dagelijks), from the genitive of welik (modern welk). The suffix was later conflated with the adjective suffix -lijk, and was respelled to reflect that.
