Yeah, seriously... like "OMSOBFG": aside from mirrors of Wikipedia and Wiktionary (including one copy and paste job), Googlinguistics yields me only one usage. That's bullshit.

Mhm. Most of this list was made up on the spot by the person editing it. A candidate for speedy deletion?

There is potential for this to be very useful, so I say keep it. However, it will need many eyes on it to make sure that everything in it is real and referenced.

I encountered a case where a German term was used in an English chat, and the writer did not seem to be aware of this fact.
So: They should be included, at least, as long as they are in Latin characters.

split this appendix?

edit

Shouldn't this be split into

  • IRC/Usenet/BBS slang
  • 4-chan memes
  • 1337 speak
  • etc

? 70.51.8.75 10:09, 30 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

I suppose that many of these terms spread / wander from one region to another. Therefore they should not be separated.
Steue (talk) 05:02, 4 June 2020 (UTC)Reply

More categories

edit

When we look at the discussion below we can see there are a lot of other slangs wich should be listed. A suggestion: We make more categories like 'list of slang in alphabetical order', 'slang in sms', 'slang in ITC', 'slang insults', 'slang in online games, facebook', etc.

It would create some oversight.

What do you people think? (my apologies for any grammar & spelling errors)

Reply from Wwhat: I think too many categories would make it harder to have an overview and would lead to fights and confusion as to which category an acronym belongs too, but I do see how a few more could be informative [note: I corrected your spelling of 'alphabetical']
Reply from User:abinkow: I think the format is fine; we just need to find a way to incorporate additional and new slangs.
{Sorry, when I found it, the example(s) was (or were) missing, therefore I deleted it. Steue (talk) 12:28, 19 May 2020 (UTC)}Reply

I suppose that many of these terms spread / wander from one region to another. Therefore they should not be separated.
If there were several lists, everyone who did not find "his" term in the first list would have to search through all!! the other lists, to be sure that it is not in yet.
And sometimes it might be difficult (for a contributor) to determine to which region a term belongs.
Or a term might be used in more than one region.
So: One list is best.
And a seperate one for those terms which are not yet defined at all or enough.
Steue (talk) 08:01, 4 June 2020 (UTC)Reply

Add one or not ? / When to add one

edit

{The following is a copy from above, because it concerns another issue too.} I know what the problem is... its impossible to know if one of these slangs is actually prolific or not based on your individual experience... we need a place where people can say if they have or have not seen it used and get an overall picture of its use so we can determine if it really should be added to the list... a perfect example is why im here.. I was amazed to see RWNJ Right wing nut job wasn't in the list and had come here specifically to post in response to a guys comment that he didn't know what it meant... so we really need to know... I think we should have a basic requirement and only add it to the list if it meets that requirement... I think we should leave out words that are simply used by small groups.. and maybe we could have another page or pages for slang that is specific to these groups

Reply from User:AldarnX: There's a lot of bogus information on this page (e.g. YEC: Young Earth Creationism), and also a lot of incorrect definitions (or at least far less popular alternatives e.g. TBF: Time between failures; everyone knows TBF is more commonly used to say 'to be fair'). How about allowing non-institutionalised academics edit this page rather than publishing someone's best guess from a random newspaper article they read on the subject?
The lack of authoritative sources makes this page problematic. The talk page is fun to read though and wikians are allowed to have fun once in a while. In the meantime, defining/finding an authoritative source for internet sland/acronyms is a project in itself. Codwiki 12:55, 15 May 2011 (UTC)Reply

What if some reader wants to understand, what some other in a small group has written!? So the number of people who use an abbreviation or term should not be of importance. These abbreviations and explanations take so little hard disk space, that there is absolutely no need to exclude anything.
Steue (talk) 05:13, 4 June 2020 (UTC)Reply

Even if an explanation has served only one reader in several years, it has done some good to someone.

Article move --> List of Internet slang

edit

There is no need for "English" in the title, as this list is *in* the English Wikitionary. Additionally, the term "Internet" should be capitalised, as it refers to the entire Internet not small internetworks, sometimes called "internets."
HidariMigi 05:45, 14 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

Hi, HidariMigi. Here in the en.Wictionary there are several words which have different meanings in different languages, and they are all covered here in the en.Wictionary. So it does make some sense to expressively write English.
But if we include foreign terms, which has been suggested, we would have to adapt something about this English.
Steue (talk) 08:13, 4 June 2020 (UTC)Reply
As for the capital "I", HidariMigi, you are right. And thank you, because I was not aware of this capitalization.
But I tend to refrain from changing the title of an article, because I do not know, whether this might cause trouble for links.
Steue (talk) 08:31, 4 June 2020 (UTC)Reply

2: Quit Fucking Talking

As far as QFT meaning "quit fucking talking" goes, I've only seen that as a misinterpretation of the 'real' definition for QFT, not actually used to mean that.

3: Quoted for Truth
Across quite a few forums, I've seen it defined as "Quoted for Truth" (Steven Colbert having nothing to do with this phrase), and it's often used when someone has already made a point you want to emphasize, so you quote them and just add "QFT".

Agreed. QFT was in use as the emphasizing "quoted for truth" in forums and newsgroups well before Colbert and "truthiness" came around in 2005.

ZORZ

This isn't precisely an acronym but an emphatic suffix.
This has so many usages, that you really have to look it up on:

And yes, it does get used on the WP, e.g. here
