From Middle High German belche, from Old High German belihha f, belihho m, from Proto-West Germanic *balikō, from Proto-Germanic *balikô (“coot”), from Proto-Indo-European *bʰel- (“white; to shine, gleam”). Cognate with Old Saxon beliko (“coot”), Latin fulica (“coot”).
