- (Noord-Brabant) Attested as het Boven Eind in 1838-1857. Compound of boven (“upper, upstream”) and eind (“edge, end”). So named to distinguish the settlement from Benedeneind.
- (Zuid-Holland) Compound of boven (“upper, upstream”) and eind (“edge, end”). Originally an independent hamlet.
