Shouldn't this be merged with Category:Professions ? Kappa 15:09, 27 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

Move to Category:Professions. A clearer name will encourage people to use this category correctly and more often (it is currently somewhat underutilised). —Μετάknowledgediscuss/deeds 20:56, 16 August 2015 (UTC)Reply

Hmm. Category:Professions was previously deleted in 2007 and then again in 2008 (and discussed again in 2009-10), with its contents being moved to Category:Occupations, each time on the theory that "Occupations" was clearer than "Professions". Occupations is a bit broader (whether that's a good thing or a bad thing), since it seems to also encompass hobbies. That may be useful, because hobbies are often difficult to cleanly distinguish from professions, since many can also be professions (e.g., most people play games as a hobby, but some people are professional gamers). - -sche (discuss) 23:20, 16 August 2015 (UTC)Reply
That would be a nice distinction, but it doesn't seem to be made. Your points are valid, essentially, but if the name is contributing to the lack of use of this category, then it would be better just to give it the name one is looking for. MW really needs to support redirects for categorisation. —Μετάknowledgediscuss/deeds 00:55, 17 August 2015 (UTC)Reply
Are homemaker, shopkeeper, warehouseman, or day laborer more likely to be spoken of as occupations or professions? DCDuring TALK 01:13, 17 August 2015 (UTC)Reply
Shopkeeper and possibly warehouseman sound like professions; the other two are, I imagine, more likely to be spoken of as occupations. We could {{movecat}} Category:Professions so that it would be a bluelink for Hotcat, but we could empty it into Category:Occupations periodically. Or could we just modify Hotcat to recognize aliases, so that e.g. if someone typed in 'Professions' it would accept and autocomplete it, but actually add 'Occupations'? - -sche (discuss) 02:07, 17 August 2015 (UTC)Reply
Hotcat having aliases would be an excellent stopgap measure. —Μετάknowledgediscuss/deeds 08:20, 17 August 2015 (UTC)Reply
All dictionary definitions of profession I can find, including our own, mention that profession generally implies lengthy specialized training; to me it even implies university training at least to the bachelor's degree if not the master's degree. I would thus not call shopkeeper and warehouseman professions. But all professions are also occupations, so I'd stick to the broader term. —Aɴɢʀ (talk) 19:16, 17 August 2015 (UTC)Reply

Return to "Occupations" page.
