From Plains Cree ᒌᐘᔮᐣ (Cīpwayān, pointed skin), from ᒌᐚᐤ (cīpwāw, to be pointed) + ᐘᔮᐣ (wayān, skin, hide) — a reference to the cut and style of Chipewyan parkas.
