O termo romance foi atribuído a esse gênero por se tratar de narrativas escritas em língua vulgar, o romanço, e não no latim tradicional. A palavra romance significa "como os romanos, à modo dos romanos". Diferentemente da canção de gesta, o romance medieval é destinado à leitura e à recitação. Entre os romances do período, dois tipos se sobressaem: o romance de cavalaria e o romance sentimental. O primeiro deles reproduz uma cosmovisão galante e cortês, mas também com comportamentos e ações guerreiras, apoiados substancialmente em dois temas: o amor e a aventura, com final feliz para os amores narrados.
The term romance was assigned to this genre because they are stories written in the common language, known as Romance, not in traditional Latin. The word romance means "like the Romans, in the manner of the Romans". Unlike chansons de geste, novels are intended to be read and recited. Among the novels of the time, two types stand out: chivalric novels and sentimental novels. The former represents a gallant and chivalrous worldview, but also features warlike behaviours and actions, [which are] substantially based on two themes: love and adventure, with a happy ending for the narrated love stories.
