German edit

Etymology edit

From French droguerie.

Pronunciation edit

  • IPA(key): /dʁoɡəˈʁiː/
  • (file)
  • Hyphenation: Dro‧ge‧rie

Noun edit

Drogerie f (genitive Drogerie, plural Drogerien)

  1. A retail store selling beauty, hygiene and household related products as well as certain non-prescription medications, roughly equivalent to a drugstore (US) or chemist (UK).

Usage notes edit

  • In Germany, the bulk of non-prescription medication is nevertheless apothekenpflichtig, meaning that it can only be sold by certified pharmacies. In turn, these pharmacies are not allowed to sell items unrelated to health concerns. Therefore there is only a limited overlap between the products sold at Drogerien and Apotheken.
