Etymology

edit

Possibly from Middle English elson, alternative spelling of elsen, elsyn, alsene (an awl or some other pointed instrument or tool), either from Middle Dutch elsene, alsene, from Old Dutch *elisna, *alasna, from Proto-West Germanic *alisnu, *alasnu, from Proto-Germanic *alasnō, or from an unrecorded Old English form.

This etymology is missing or incomplete. Please add to it, or discuss it at the Etymology scriptorium.
Particularly: “There are instances in Middle English where "elsen" is spelled "elson", such as in "trynkettus and tournyng-stonys and elson bladys, Colrakus and copstolus one gret whyle-barrous" on page 86 of the 1845 edition of Herkyn to my tale edited by T. Wright and J. O. Halliwell, but we lack a source linking such usage to the surname.”
