Borrowed from Sinhalese එළු (eḷu), හෙළු (heḷu), from Prakrit 𑀲𑀻𑀳𑀮 (sīhala) (compare Pali sīhala), from Sanskrit सिंहल (siṃhala, literally “lionlike”), from सिंह (siṃha, “lion”) + -ल (-la). Doublet of Ceylon and Sinhala.
