From Middle High German vetze (“rag, tatters”), from Middle High German vazzen, from Old High German vaz, from Proto-Germanic *fatą, from Proto-Indo-European *pod- (“vessel, container”). Cognate with German Fetzen, Old Norse fǫt (“clothes”), Portuguese fato (“clothing”), Spanish hato. Doublet of Fåss.
