Potentially attested as frangilande in 944, attested with certainty as franghum in 1471. Calque of West Frisian Franjumerbuorren, a compound of a toponym derived from Old Frisian Frana (a personal name) or frana (lord) and hēm (home, settlement) and the plural form of buer (house, cottage).
