First attested as Fransche Hoeve in 1838-1857. Derived from Frans (“French”) and hoeve (“piece of land of a certain size, farmstead”). The name refers to a plot of land where a group of French soldiers camped during the Napoleonic Wars or to a piece of land that had been developed by these soldiers.
