From Middle Dutch hoeve, from Old Dutch houva, hoba, from Proto-Germanic *hōbō ‎(plot of land). Cognates include German Hube, Old Saxon hōƀa; beyond the Germanic languages it is related to Ancient Greek κῆπος ‎(kêpos, garden, orchard).
