First attested as gala in 1174. Etymology unknown. Proposed etymologies include a derivation from a compound hydronym formed from either Proto-Germanic *galan (sing, rage) or gal (bile, yellow) and aa (water, river) or from Proto-Germanic *alha- (homestead, farmstead) prefixed with the collectivising prefix ga-.
