Dutch edit

Etymology edit

First attested as hasbenni in the 10th or 11th century. Potentially a compound of Proto-Germanic *Hasiz (Hessians) and Old Dutch banna (legal district). An alternative hypothesis posits a derivation from a compound of Old Dutch *hasi (brushwood) and been (pasture). Compare Haspengouw, Neerhespen and Overhespen.
