Etymology edit

First attested as in hellouua in 850. Likely related to dialectal German helw (cloudy, foggy) and Old High German huliwa (pool). Alternative etymologies include a compound derived from Middle Dutch hel (bright) and lo (pool) and a less likely compound derivation from Old Dutch hel (bright, clear) and ouw (land next to water).
