Etymology edit

First attested as de horsne in 1242. Etymology unknown. Not a compound of Middle Dutch hors (horse, Equus ferus caballus) and winne (pasture, meadow). Perhaps derived from a term related to Middle Dutch hore (mud, clay) with -sna suffix.
