Huinen
Dutch edit
Etymology edit
First attested as copus de hunen in 1313. Etymology unknown. It is unclear whether Proto-Germanic *hûn- (“brown, dark, muddy”) is present in the toponym. A derivation from Old Dutch Huno (“a personal name”) is unlikely. Proposed derivations from the tribal name of the Hûnni or the term hun (“giant”) are even more unlikely. Compare Hunnerberg.
