Borrowed from Hindi हैदराबाद (haidarābād) / Urdu حیدرآباد (haidarābād), from हैदर (haidar) / حیدر (haidar, lion) + -आबाद (-ābād) / آباد (ābād, -ābād, placename suffix). Named in honour of the Caliph Ali Ibn Abi Talib, nicknamed "Haidar" for his lion-like valour in battles.[1]
