Calque of English Orange Shirt Day. From the colour of the shirt worn by a survivor of the residential school system, that was forcibly removed by Christian missionaries attempting to assimilate her into the culture of Canada's settlers, and away from her Indigenous culture. From those observing the day, who wear orange T-shirts.
