First attested as iudifax in 1165. Etymology unknown. Possibly a compound of iūdicō (judicial) + fax (hair, head of hair) or Latinized -fahs, as a prefix or suffix found in toponyms meaning an area or plot of short, rough grass. Compare Halifax.
