Kastanie
German edit
Etymology edit
From Middle High German kastānie, corrupted by Old French chastaigne, from Old High German kestina, kestinna, from Proto-West Germanic *kastannjā (“chestnut”).
Pronunciation edit
Noun edit
Kastanie f (genitive Kastanie, plural Kastanien)
- chestnut
- a tree of the genus Castanea, or its nut
- horse-chestnut, a tree of the genus Aesculus, or its nut
- Synonym: Rosskastanie
Usage notes edit
- In biological terminology, the simplex Kastanie refers to the genus Castanea, while Aesculus must be specified as Rosskastanie. However, in non-specialist use it is often the horse-chestnut which is thought of as the proto-typical Kastanie.
