Ultimately from Matthaeus, from Koine Greek Ματθαῖος (Matthaîos), several figures in the New Testament including the apostle Matthew, from Hebrew מַתִּתְיָהוּ (Mattiṯyāhū), from מַתָּנַת (gift, reward) + יהוה (YHWH, God). Doublet of Matthijs and Mattias. Compare French Matthieu and Matthias.
