Ultimately from Late Latin Matthiās and Matthaeus, from Koine Greek Ματθαῖος (Matthaîos), Ματθίας (Matthías), &c., several figures in the New Testament including the apostles Matthew and Matthias, from Hebrew מַתִּתְיָהוּ (Mattiṯyāhū), from מַתָּנַת (gift, reward) + יהוה (YHWH, God). Doublet of Matteüs and Mattias. Compare French Matthieu and Matthias.
