editFirst attested as messau in 1178. Etymology unknown. Proposed derivations have included a derivation from a compound including Proto-Germanic *ahwjô- (“land next to a watercourse”), a derivation from a hydronym, or from Latin mansus (“house, homestead”) or mesuagium (“house”).
