Etymology

Sino-Vietnamese word from 日本, from Japanese 日本, with mixed Northern-Southern reading. The humorous effect is due to the usage of bổn, whose usage has been greatly reduced to some fringe cases, as is the case with some other originally literary Sino-Vietnamese readings.

     Vua Minh Trị là vua có danh tiếng công đức của Nhật Bổn, mà cuối năm hiệu Minh Trị, ông ta còn bị cái hiềm thích khách; mà năm mới rồi đây, quan tể tướng Nhật Bổn bị giết trong ga xe lửa cũng vì cớ ấy.

     Emperor Meiji was a notedly virtuous monarch of Japan, and still in a late Meiji year, he was at risk of assassination; just recently, Japan’s Chancellor has been killed in a train station for the same reason.
