Etymology edit

First attested as Nieuwe Statenzijl in 1913. Derived from nieuw (“new”) and a compound of Staten (“Estates General”) and zijl (“drainage sluice”). The element nieuw was added to distinguish the toponym from Oude Statenzijl.
