Etymology

edit

First attested as nifterka in 1117. Etymology uncertain. The first element might be Old Dutch niftar (behind, rear). Alternatively, it may be derived from Proto-Indo-European *nebhastra- (foggy, western). The element -rik has been interpreted as the ancient suffix Proto-Germanic *-ikja-. Compare Blerick, Bunnik, Cuijk, Geverik, Lopik, Maurik, Mook, Nigtevecht, Odijk, Varik, Woezik and Fellerich.
