First attested as lobica in 1130-1161. Etymology uncertain. Potentially derived from a personal name suffixed with the Latin -acum suffix or from an unknown term suffixed with the Proto-Germanic *ikja- suffix. Not derived from a compound of lo (“light forest”) and beek (“brook, stream”).
