Etymology edit

First attested as nisterle in the first quarter of the 13th century. Derived from a compound of an unclear first element that has been variously interpreted as a toponym and as Middle Dutch nest (nest, burrow, resting place) and lo (light forest). The second element was gradually reinterpreted to rode (land cleared of trees).
