Potentially attested as nuthere in 1297, attested with certainty as nuchtere and nuthare in 1385. The toponym appears to be a compound of an uncertain first element and Old Dutch heri (“sandy ridge”). The first element may be nut (“use, benefit”) or refer to the presence of nut-bearing trees near the settlement. Compare Nutter.
