Dutch edit

Etymology edit

First attested with certainty as bietha in 1034. Compound of op (up, high) and a second element that is difficult to interpret. Potentially derived from Old Dutch *bihegan (surrounded by a hedge) (see haag) or *bicht (turn, corner) (compare bocht). The element op was added at a later date in order to distinguish the settlement from the younger Grevenbicht. Compare Buchten.
