Etymology edit

First attested as oude rewijc in 1295-1297. Compound of Middle Dutch out (old) and the toponym Reeuwijk, a compound of Middle Dutch ree (alignment, boundary line, boundary ditch) and wyc (farmstead, village, settlement) or wic (inlet, side channel). Named after a set of polders.
