First attested as padapole in the 13th century. Compound of either Middle Dutch Pada (“a personal name”) or Old Dutch *patha- (“swamp”) and poel (“pool”). Compare Padhuis, Peize and Pesse.
The neighbourhood is named after the hamlet.
