Ancient Greek Πανδώρα (Pandṓra, “Pandora”) + -virus. From Latin virus (“virus”). From the discovery of the virus being akin to opening a Pandora's box of new possibilities in viral research and capabilities. From Pandora, the Greek mythological figure who opened Pandora's box.
