Late 16th or early 17th century calque of Latin ortographia, from Ancient Greek ὀρθογρᾰφῐ́ᾱ (orthographíā); compare Old High German rehtscrībāri (person who writes correctly), itself a calque of Latin orthographus.[1][2] By surface analysis, recht (proper, correct) +‎ Schreibung (spelling)
