Reconstruction:Latin/dominionem
Latin
editEtymology
editFrom dominus (“master, lord”) + -iōnem[1] apparently with an etymological sense like "dominant tower".[2] Compare *pinniōnem ("gable" < pinna)[3] or *summiōnem (‘peak’ < summum).[4]
The Old French form has also been claimed to derive from a supposed Frankish *dungijā f[5] (from Proto-Germanic *dungijǭ "apartment, bower"). This is unlikely[6] for a number of reasons:
- It would fail to account for the complete absence of any feminine form in Romance.
- It would fail to account for the /m/ found not only in Old Occitan domnhon – and other variants thereof – but also in the earliest recorded form of the word in the northeast of France (1040's, Mouzon).[7]
Pronunciation
